Twenty years ago, in Vancouver, Washington, where Nehemiah Project International and the Nehemiah E-Community are headquartered, a group of spirit-filled Christian businessmen started a community prayer breakfast. Over the years, political influences have changed, the culture has transitioned, yet the tradition of the annual community prayer breakfast has continued year after year and become a cornerstone event for the city. Prayer breakfasts in the community are nationwide respected days of prayer and are impactful and treasured freedom in America.
Hosted at the Vancouver Hilton, the community-wide event brought Vancouver area residents together to pray for the area’s leadership, first responders, active military, veterans, and Wounded Warriors. Each year, the event also honors a citizen who has made an exemplary impact through service. This year’s local citizen honoree was Dixie Lee Hotaling. Dixie is the founder of Embrace Success Counseling Services, supporting the mental health community, schools, and businesses, and is the founder of the Healing on The Homefront Program that specifically serves military families. At 82 years young, Dixie is an active and involved woman of faith and a reminder of the outreach that each of us can have in our communities.

While some American stories, like my own, are newer, and others are stories that began generations ago, our narratives unite us. In this country, we are unified and blessed by the freedoms that we have, as Americans, to worship, to learn, to achieve, to live life abundantly, and of course, to pray.
It was my privilege to tell my personal American story. As many of you know, my life began in Douala, Cameroon, where I lived until, as a teen, I was sent to the United States to live with my aunt and study in American schools. After I came to America and began experiencing the freedom and opportunity of this culture, I also became a believer and a follower of Christ.

Celebrating Freedom
If you reside in America, you already know and are blessed by the freedoms and opportunities that abound in this country. Even in times when our nation feels as if there is more discourse than unity, we celebrate the freedom we have to speak out and be heard. We pray for Christians worldwide who do not always have the free expression that we as Americans often take for granted. But we celebrate the knowledge that Christ sets all Believers free. Galatians 5:1 (NIV) reminds us, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”
We know you join us in prayer for our brothers and sisters around the world. And we know firsthand that because you pray for the global network of Nehemiah staff, coaches, trainers, and biblical entrepreneurs that your prayers are heard and answered.
