2018 is almost here! Are you ready for it?
Imagine yourself just a few days in the future. It is Wednesday January 2nd, 2018, the first work day of this brand new year. Do you have your strategy and action plan in place for the new year? If you don’t, it could take you until spring time to get to peak effectiveness.
A strong strategic plan helps to define who will do what, how success is defined, how to get there, next steps to take, and what it will cost the organization to achieve it. Without addressing those issues in concrete, measurable terms, success will be, at best, difficult and, at worst, impossible.
So, as you are planning, keep these things in mind:
- The most important thing you can do is to start with prayer. James writes in James 4:13-16,
“Look here, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.’ How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. What you ought to say is, ‘If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.’ Otherwise you are boasting about your own plans, and all such boasting is evil.”
It may seem like this is a passage in opposition to planning. Actually, it is in opposition to planning that does not include God and His direction. If our future is determined by His will then ask Him into the planning process. Find out what God wants to do with you in this New Year. Take the time to hear Him whisper to you the great and wonderful things He wants to do through your business this year. - Involve others. If God has put together a team for you to work with, then use the perspectives of the team to gain a clearer sense of what you should be trying to accomplish–together. Members of your team will own the vision if they have a part of writing the vision as well. Show them that you value them by asking for their input.
- Make sure that you are making time for yourself. Steven Covey in 7 Habits of Highly Effective People writes about what he called the “P/PC Balance.” Just like your car and your home, both must be maintained and used, so our bodies, minds, souls, and spirits need to be more than simply a means for production, they need to be cared for as well. Put it into your plan for the New Year. If you are the owner, schedule an afternoon or two off per month just to recuperate and get restored. Plan personal prayer and growth retreats where you can hear from God and read good books that feed your soul. True priorities will always find their way into your calendar. Make taking care of yourself one of those grave priorities and plan now to make sure it happens. It is not selfish. It is for your good, the good of your family, and for those who look to you for guidance and leadership.
Do these three things. Make a strategic plan, write it down, begin to work on it, and see that it is implemented. If you do, you will soon discover the power of that which God has entrusted to your hands for this season. Steward it well.
