This is My Story, This is My Song

Joseph, in the Bible, was seventeen years old when God deposited a dream that was outrageous and world-changing, and its significance was so beyond the scope of Joseph’s youthful understanding. The fact that he would be chosen to preserve the lives of many from famine, and through his family, the promised Savior would come. (Genesis 27:2)

But the journey to realize what God had spoken was layered with betrayal and years of waiting, but Joseph remained faithful. He trusted the Lord, and in Pharaoh’s court, he “did good” as it says in Psalm 37:3,Trust in the LORD and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper.”

Has God given you a dream? Maybe you are barely holding on to it, with years of waiting on the Lord. I’m convinced that these biblical examples, like we see in Joseph’s life, are timeless blueprints from the Lord on how He deals with human beings. Though we may consider these ancient passages as non-relatable examples of biblical proportions for another time and place, we would do well to reconsider this conclusion. We may miss the encouragement from these stories in our own lives if we don’t consider that God could walk us through the same redemptive and victorious narrative, wherever we find ourselves in the timeline.

To add a personal touch to this post, when I was 22 years old, the Lord gave me a dream, empowered me, and provided the way for this dream for years. However, yes, like Joseph, I started to face setbacks and even betrayal in my business. Now within my story, I haven’t reached the ‘palace from the prison’ as Joseph did, but the Lord has not given me permission to leave that dream, which was given over five years ago. Nevertheless, I trust in the Lord and His promises that He will fulfill the desires of my heart, even if He does not bring it to pass how I imagined it.

I want to encourage you that God is not only entirely perfect in His ways, but He owns the cattle on a thousand hills. And in the day in and day out of your faithfulness to Him and as you “trust the Lord and do good” (Psalm 37:3, NLT), He has not forgotten about the dreams He gave you. God will do as He pleases as it says in Psalm 115:3 (NIV), “Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him,” yet He can be trusted. We should never try to get God to follow our plans, He is the Good Shepherd, and He is the one whose will we should prioritize – in His time, in His way.

How can you do “good” as you trust and wait on the Lord?

  1. Who can you help, or who can you support who is earlier in the journey than yourself?
  2. How can you prepare yourself when the Lord does answer or give the breakthrough in your life or business?
  3. As you wait, it can be either long-term or short-term, but it’s your life, your story, so enjoy the process. Learn to be content like the Apostle Paul in Philippians 4:10-13. Take a weekend trip with the family, have a picnic at the lake, or host a game night with friends.

As the old hymn “Blessed Assurance” explained so beautifully, ‘This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long’. Embrace your story, trust the Lord as you wait, do good, and make the devil mad that despite the waiting and his tactics towards you, you remain hopeful and believe in God’s goodness.

Lastly, as it promises in Psalm 84:11 (AMP), “…The LORD bestows grace and favor and honor; No good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly. The Lord is so good to His people, but He is also the most qualified teacher, and if we want to gain the “success rate” He offers, we must take His “course”  and cooperate with His plans for our lives and know that “No good thing will He withhold”. Repeat that verse to yourself whenever you doubt the journey. And think how sweet it will be when you can say like Joseph, You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” (Genesis 50:20, NIV)

Ponder that statement, “many lives.” Who will be blessed by your life or business if you remain faithful? However, if God withholds some things you may be praying for, perhaps that might not be a good thing or not the right timing for it. Wait on the Lord, and trust that His ways will reap an abundant harvest if you do not give up. (Galatians 6:9)
