7 Steps to Cultivating the Spirit of Entrepreneurship in a Local Church

Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. — Ephesians 4:28 (NKJV)

What if I told you that we have a strategy that can ensure full employment in any local church, regardless of the economy or geographic location? Yes, we do—and the answer is entrepreneurship.

You may be thinking, “How can entrepreneurship be the answer when almost 50% of businesses fail within the first five years?” While this is true, entrepreneurship is not only about starting a business—it’s about being productive.

“Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. And likewise, he who had received two gained two more also.” — Matthew 25:16-17 (NKJV)

The word entrepreneurship comes from the French word “entreprendre”, meaning “to initiate.” Entrepreneurs are initiators, innovators, and creators. They don’t have to own a business, but they are crucial to driving growth within a business.

Without entrepreneurs, needs go unmet, businesses stagnate, and innovation halts—which means fewer jobs are created. Entrepreneurs, whether starting their own ventures or contributing to others, are vital to business growth. To achieve 100% full employment in a church community, you need initiators — individuals who take the initiative to solve problems, generate revenue, and drive innovation, all while fulfilling their God-given potential.

For You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother’s womb.
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made…
Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.
And in Your book, they all were written,
the days fashioned for me,
when as yet there were none of them.
— Psalm 139:13-16 (NKJV)

Join us tomorrow for the Nehemiah Entrepreneurship Community Global Forum and learn how to cultivate the spirit of entrepreneurship in your church and community. Hear from pastors who are not just leaders of local churches but are also entrepreneurs themselves.

  1. Teach the Doctrine of the Kingdom versus Religion: Shift the focus from religion to Kingdom principles, which encourage growth, innovation, and stewardship.
  2. Emphasize the Power of the Holy Spirit over Works: Empower individuals to rely on the Holy Spirit for guidance and inspiration, rather than solely on their own efforts.
  3. Create an Environment that Encourages and Rewards Risk-Taking: Foster a culture where taking calculated risks is encouraged, and innovation is celebrated.
  4. Do Not Condemn Failure: Treat failure as a learning opportunity, not as a defeat. Encourage resilience and continuous improvement.
  5. Help Individuals Discover Their Talents: Guide individuals in uncovering their unique God-given talents, which are the seeds for entrepreneurial success.
  6. Challenge Individuals to Execute Their Ideas: Provide support and mentorship as individuals move from idea to action.
  7. Build an Entrepreneurial Community: Create a community within the church where entrepreneurs can connect, collaborate, and grow together.

We will discuss these principles and more at the upcoming Nehemiah Entrepreneurship Community Global Forum, where we will explore Church Growth and Sustainability. Learn how to cultivate spiritual entrepreneurship and ensure full employment in your local church.

Entrepreneurship, when nurtured within the framework of a church community, can drive economic growth, foster innovation, and help individuals reach their full potential—both spiritually and economically. Nehemiah Entrepreneurship Community works with churches through our Sustainable Church Initiative to help them create an entrepreneurship culture within their local community.
