The Lion of Judah
“And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.” – Revelation 5:1-5 (NKJV)
Why is Jesus called the Lion of Judah? What is the significance? What can we learn from it?
The Lion, known as the King of the Jungle, is a majestic predator who usually lives in a pride and demonstrates majestic and royal qualities.
Some of the characteristics of the lion include:
- Strength
- Work in teams
- Can be a Loner
- Purposeful
- Smart
- Competitive
- Protector
Jesus is referred to in Revelation as the Lion of Judah. This reference is not a coincidence, it speaks to the fact that our Savior has Lion-like characteristics. He is not only a sacrificial Lamb but He also embodies all of the positive attributes of the Lion.
He is strong: As God in the flesh, there is no other person or being stronger than He is.
- He is team-oriented: He could have come to earth and single-handedly carried out His mission but He chose to build a team of disciples to help Him.
- He can be a Loner: Though He worked with His disciples to carry out His mission, He often took time alone with the Father and chose to go to the cross even when all His disciples abandoned Him.
- He is Purposeful: Nothing He does is outside of His purpose to seek and save the Lost. He does not act out of pride or greed but does everything in line with the calling that His Father gave Him.
- He is smart: Just read the Gospels; how He responded to the questions He was asked by those who wanted to trap Him, how He dealt with the Roman authorities. There was no one wiser.
- He is competitive: He makes it clear that no one can serve two masters. He demands absolute loyalty from His subjects and will not yield His reign to anyone else.
- He is a protector: He laid down His life to save the Human race especially those who will put their trust in Him
Yes, He is a Lion but more than that He is the Lion of Judah. Judah represents the tribe through which King David would come from. King David would be symbolic of the righteous king ordained by God to establish the lineage through which Christ would be born. The Lion of Judah is then the righteous eternal ruler that represents God’s sovereign rule on earth and in eternity. As long as He reigns, we have hope. The Apostle John saw no hope in the book of Revelations until He was reminded of the presence of the Lion of Judah. He is our liberator, our hope, and our savior.
Just as Jesus is the Lion of Judah, we are called as His disciples to emulate Him and take on His ways. We were created in His image and likeness just as He exemplifies those characteristics, we can as well. Whatever your circumstances, whatever you are going through, embrace your call as a disciple of Jesus Christ and reflect His will and ways in the marketplace. Just as He is called to rule through eternity, you are called to dominate in your industry and business sector.
My prayer for you today is that God will give you the grace to reflect the characteristics of the Lion of Judah and lead in your industry or business.
