While it certainly does not exclude financial prosperity, that is not the primary focus of the passage.

In context, the Apostle John is writing to a faithful believer named Gaius. Although Gaius may have been physically unwell, he demonstrated remarkable spiritual maturity. He was known for his generous hospitality and sincere love for other believers—clear indicators of a thriving spiritual life. He also walked in truth, meaning he not only understood the Word of God but lived it out with integrity.

John’s prayer for Gaius reflects a holistic vision of prosperity: that he would flourish spiritually, financially, socially, and physically—“even as your soul prospers.” This suggests that while Gaius was doing well spiritually, his physical health may not have been aligned with his spiritual strength.

A more complete interpretation of this verse would be: “Just as you’ve been diligent in pursuing spiritual growth, be equally committed to caring for your physical health.”

Many Biblical Entrepreneurs today resemble Gaius. They are devoted to building Kingdom businesses, integrating their faith in how they lead, give, and serve. They tithe through their business, treat employees and customers with love and respect, and serve as salt and light in their industry and community.

Yet, like Gaius, many do not give the same attention to their physical health. They nurture their soul but neglect their body.

But Scripture teaches that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). Without a healthy body, we cannot sustain the work of building God’s Kingdom through business. What good is it to win souls and build great companies if our physical bodies fail in the process?

Jesus healed the sick, restored the broken, and even raised the dead—not just for signs and wonders—but because He knew that health matters for Kingdom impact.

What does it mean to be in good health as your soul prospers?

It means giving equal priority to your mental and physical well-being as you do to your spiritual growth. It means honoring your body as the vessel through which God’s Spirit dwells and works.

Here are 7 ways to walk in good health as your soul prospers:

Develop a personal spiritual rhythm beyond public ministry and work.

Set your mind on things above, trusting God rather than worrying about tomorrow.

Prioritize self-care through proper diet, exercise, and vitamins.

Build authentic relationships outside of work and ministry settings.

Steward well the resources God has entrusted to you.

Live within your means and manage your finances wisely.

Make rest a priority, remembering even God rested.

Caring for your body is a stewardship obligation. Without it, the wealth you create and the businesses you build won’t matter—you won’t live long enough to enjoy them. And even if you do, poor health will diminish your quality of life and your ability to serve effectively.

My prayer for you is that you will prosper in every area – and be in good health – even as your soul prospers.

WEEKLY DEVOTIONAL BY PATRICE
