{"id":1337,"date":"2010-05-03T04:44:13","date_gmt":"2010-05-03T04:44:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nehemiah.pivotdev.com\/blog\/?p=266"},"modified":"2020-03-16T23:20:44","modified_gmt":"2020-03-17T06:20:44","slug":"causes-of-poverty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nehemiahecommunity.com\/members\/devotionals\/causes-of-poverty\/","title":{"rendered":"Causes of Poverty","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>\u201cFor you have the poor with you always but me you do not have always<\/em>\u201d \u2013<strong>Matthew 26:11<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many successful entrepreneurs started out poor or came from poor families. \u00a0Some in their entrepreneurship journey may experience temporary material poverty due to the trials and tests of building a business before they can expect to see the fruit of financial success.\u00a0 Early in our journey, my wife and I were surprised to discover that our income was below the poverty line according the United States Internal Revenue Service tax code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Poverty is the state of having little or no money and few or no material possessions in relationship to your needs for the essentials for proper living such as: food, clothing shelter, etc. \u00a0Poverty is defined as \u201ca condition characterized by severe deprivation of basic human needs including food, safe drinking water, sanitation facilities, health, shelter, education, and information\u201d (The Copenhagen Declaration, discussed at the U.N.) There are also statistical definitions of poverty.\u00a0 The World Bank\u2019s statistical definition for poverty in underdeveloped nations is $2 a day and $1 a day for extreme poverty.\u00a0 Based on these numbers, almost one half of the world\u2019s population lives in poverty.\u00a0 Most developed countries usually set their own poverty level numbers; some have set them as high as $14 a day.\u00a0 The 2005 poverty level number in the United States for single individuals was $26.19 a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The world\u2019s goal is to eradicate poverty.\u00a0 Although this goal is noteworthy and honorable, it is unrealistic.\u00a0 The scriptures declare that the poor will always be among us (John 12:8).\u00a0 Why would a loving God allow this since He has the power to alleviate poverty?\u00a0 The fact is, like sickness and disease, poverty is a consequence of the fall of man.\u00a0 Prior to sin, man enjoyed perfect union with God, total provision, and perfect health.\u00a0 However, due to the desire for more, Adam and Eve gave into the devil\u2019s temptation and ate the forbidden fruit which led to their fall.\u00a0 That fall had several consequences, one of which included material poverty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of Adam and Eve\u2019s sin, we all deserve permanent material poverty, but due to God\u2019s mercy and the redemption of Jesus Christ, we have the opportunity to escape it through work.\u00a0 In spite of the mercy of God and the price that Jesus paid for us, not all will escape material poverty.\u00a0 Since we live in a fallen world there are forces beyond our control that may cause some of us to temporarily or permanently experience material poverty.\u00a0 There are also many of us who experience poverty as a result of our own choices.\u00a0 Here are the common reasons individuals and families become victims of material poverty:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>War <\/strong>\u2013 being a victim of military attack by a foreign force or a group within your own country.\u00a0 This usually leads to loss of material resources for individuals and destruction of infrastructure within the country where the war occurs.\u00a0 <em>\u201cAnd it came to pass, when David and his men were come to Ziklag on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the south, and Ziklag, and smitten Ziklag, and burned it with fire.\u201d<\/em> I Samuel 30:1.<\/li><li><strong>Natural disaster (Illness)<\/strong> \u2013 being a victim of forces of nature such as drought, hurricanes, etc. <em>\u201cAnd there will I nourish thee; for yet there are five years of famine; lest thou, and thy household, and all that thou hast, come to poverty.\u201d <\/em>Genesis 45:11.<\/li><li><strong>Government Injustice <\/strong>\u2013 being a victim of unjust laws and policies by government.\u00a0 <em>\u201cMuch food is in the tillage of the poor: but there is that is destroyed for want of judgment.\u201d<\/em> Proverbs 13:23.<\/li><li><strong>Laziness <\/strong>\u2013 an unwillingness to exercise any effort or being non- productive.\u00a0 <em>\u201cA little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep so shall your poverty come on you like a prowler, and your need like an armed man.\u201d<\/em> Proverbs 6:10-11, Proverbs 24:30-34, Proverbs 20:13.<\/li><li><strong>Rejection of wisdom<\/strong> \u2013 choosing not to learn or follow known best practices, or the known instructions of the Lord. <em>\u201cPoverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured.\u201d<\/em> Proverbs 13:18.<\/li><li><strong>Lack of Self-Control or Love of Pleasure<\/strong> \u2013 not being able to discipline oneself, or the overindulgence of things such as food, drink, and entertainment.\u00a0 <em>\u201cHe that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich.\u201d<\/em> Proverbs 28:19, 23:21.<\/li><li><strong>Greed <\/strong>\u2013 a restless and ambitious pursuit of material gain.\u00a0 <em>\u201cHe that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye, and considereth not that poverty shall come upon him.\u201d<\/em> Proverbs 28:22.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to note that all of these causes are consequences of sin.\u00a0 These are mere symptoms since without sin none of them would exist.\u00a0 What should our attitude be toward the poor?\u00a0 Although the poor will always be among us, we are called to show them the love of Christ and treat poverty as an enemy of the Gospel.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Biblical Entrepreneurs, we have a responsibility to first ensure that we are not victims of poverty by our own doing.\u00a0 We need to do what we can so that we may provide for ourselves and our families.\u00a0 Second, we must show mercy and not pity to those who are poor among us, especially fellow believers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mercy<\/strong> recognizes that each person has the God-given ability to ensure his or her own well-being.\u00a0 It gives people a hand-up during difficult times so that they may continue to provide for themselves and their families.
