holy spirit 01 - Nehemiah E-CommunityA guest blog post from Matthew Hartsfield.

How often have you prayed for God to keep you safe? Maybe even today you have asked God to protect you. Well, that’s certainly understandable. We all want to be safe and protected. But are prayers of safety and protection really what should be pouring out of our quiet time?

In Acts chapter 4 we see the account of Peter and John’s arrest and interrogation before the religious leaders. After Peter and John were eventually released they returned to the other believers and a prayer was offered up to God. In this prayer they acknowledged that many people were united against them and Jesus. Tensions were high. Threats were made against the Christ-followers.

So certainly they asked God for safety and protection. Ha! Listen to their prayer in Acts 4:29-30…

O Lord, hear their threats and give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word. Stretch out your hand with healing power, may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”

Not a word about safety or protection, let alone comfort. And what do you think happened when they prayed for boldness instead of safety? This is the best part!

  • The meeting place shook!
  • They were all filled with the Holy Spirit!
  • They preached God’s Word boldly!

Yes! That’s what I’m talking about! Isn’t that what we need today? Courageous believers who pray boldly, operate under the influence of the Holy Spirit, shake places and speak boldly about Jesus!

So, what are you praying for today?
