“Then Moses said to God, “Behold, I am going to the sons of Israel, and I will say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you.’ Now they may say to me, ‘What is His name?’ What shall I say to them?” God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”  Exodus 3:13-14

I don’t know about you – but this verse was pretty puzzling the first time or two that I read it.   And I am certain that even now – years later – there is still much more that God wants to reveal.

But isn’t that the beauty of God and His Word?

Alive and active – full of new truth every-time we open it up.

The Matthew Henry Commentary at www.biblehub.com explains it this way:

“All objections are answered in, Certainly I will be with thee. That is enough.  A name that denotes what he is in himself, I AM THAT I AM. This explains his name Jehovah, and signifies, 1. That he is self-existent: he has his being of himself. 2. That he is eternal and unchangeable, and always the same, yesterday, to-day, and forever. 3. That he is incomprehensible; we cannot by searching find him out: this name checks all bold and curious inquiries concerning God. 4. That he is faithful and true to all his promises, unchangeable in his word as well as in his nature; let Israel know this, I AM hath sent me unto you. I am, and there is none else besides me. All else have their being from God, and are wholly dependent upon him.”

I Am simply says it all.

Nothing more needs to be said.

God is God…and as our pastor often says…“I am not!?!”

Yet…in those really tough, scary places of life – this may seem like just one more Christian platitude that isn’t all that helpful!

Maybe a  bit too lofty to bring comfort.

Over the years, God has helped me see his all powerful name in a more personal – tender – loving way.

Cause that is how I know my God.

He is real…he is always with me…he is whatever I need whenever I need it.

In the good times  – he celebrates with me.  He sings over me.

Just as it is with me toward my children and grandchildren…He is happy when I am happy.

In my sad times – he cries with me.

In my times of fear – he holds me close.

He is always ready to say, “I am…”

I am what you need right in this moment.

I am your Abba Father.

I am here.

I am trustworthy

I am head over heals in love with you!

I am your shield and your protection.

I am your provision.

I am…

And you know what?

It is the “…” that really says it all.

It is in the “…” where God meets you in your place of greatest need.

And the good news?

The words YOU choose to put behind the “…” can be endless.

For our God promises…

I am who I am and I will meet you right where you are!

So…what word do you need to put behind the “…” today?

What word do you need to remember about who God is and how much he loves you?

Take a moment and fill in the blank:

God is says I am…_____________.

Now, take one more moment  – rest in that assurance and revel in the goodness of God!
