Perhaps you don’t call it that. . . you might just be thinking I’ll do it later. But – truth be told – quitting can look a lot like procrastination.
Putting off something that conveniently never makes it back on your calendar is a version of quitting.
And over the years we have learned, running a business requires you to keep going – not putting off what must be done.
Hebrews 12:1 says:
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.
Tom and I recently returned home from a conference and those type of events can leave us feeling like we’ve run a marathon for 4 days straight. Yet, when we get home, there is much to be done. In addition to all the follow-up, we have mountains of email and phone calls to make. There is a long list of pending projects still waiting – not to mention a frig that is bare and all the household “stuff” to be done!?!
It is times like this that I ponder Hebrews 12:1 — asking the Lord to provide the strength – and the grace – to lay aside all that would slow me down so I can keep running the race He has set before me!
Thankfully, He gently reminds me that I can do all things through His strength – not my own. He assures me that there are many on earth – and in heaven – who are praying on my behalf. And He lets me know I am able to do this work because He has already helped me develop the habit of doing what is needed – regardless of how I feel.
In Steven Pressfield’s book the “War of Art”, he encourages the reader to think like a professional, not an amateur. He tells us that a professional does not think of excuses – they simply bear down and do what it takes to get the job done. Failure is not an option.
So, if you find yourself procrastinating – if you are making all the usual excuses – if you are ready to throw up your hands and quit – DON’T!!!
Be strengthened by this message. Receive it as a much needed word of encouragement – take a step back – and DECIDE on this day that you will keep going.
That is what professionals do!
And that is what God is calling us to be – and do – for Him.
