Give the Gift of Business This Thanksgiving Season

thankful - Nehemiah E-Community

As we celebrate thanksgiving, we are thankful for you and the privilege to serve you on this journey to fulfill God’s purpose in the marketplace. Giving thanks is not just a tradition of the Christian faith, but it has been rooted in the American value system since 1621, when the first Thanksgiving was celebrated. It was then that the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a National Thanksgiving Day to be held every November. As you celebrate Thanksgiving this week, consider sharing your gratitude by giving the gift of business to others around the world through your giving. Help us raise $100k by December 31st to ensure that kingdom businesses continue to be built globally and others are able to have something to be thankful for.

Also, make a list of the things you are thankful for this year and share it with your family during your Thanksgiving dinner. As you make your list, here are items to consider:

  1. Jesus Christ – Salvation, protection, and provision
  2. Your health – Sound mind and able body
  3. Your wife or husband – Loving you unconditionally and being patient with you
  4. Your children – The gift they are to you
  5. Your business or job – Giving you an outlet to serve others for the glory of God
  6. Your friends – Being companions along the journey of life
  7. Your government – Protecting the innocent and bringing justice to the guilty

Also, as you shop on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, do not forget Giving Tuesday, which is on November 28th. Consider being one of many who are committed to giving their gift on or before Tuesday in celebration of Giving Tuesday.

Thanksgiving Poem by Paul Laurence Dunbar

The sun hath shed its kindly light,
Our harvesting is gladly o’er
Our fields have felt no killing blight,
Our bins are filled with goodly store.
From pestilence, fire, flood, and sword
We have been spared by thy decree,
And now with humble hearts, O Lord,
We come to pay our thanks to thee.
We feel that had our merits been
The measure of thy gifts to us,
We erring children, born of sin,
Might not now be rejoicing thus.
No deed of our hath brought us grace;
When thou were nigh our sight was dull,
We hid in trembling from thy face,
But thou, O God, wert merciful.
Thy mighty hand o’er all the land
Hath still been open to bestow
Those blessings which our wants demand
From heaven, whence all blessings flow.
Thou hast, with ever watchful eye,
Looked down on us with holy care,
And from thy storehouse in the sky
Hast scattered plenty everywhere.
Then lift we up our songs of praise
To thee, O Father, good and kind;
To thee we consecrate our days;
Be thine the temple of each mind.
With incense sweet our thanks ascend;
Before thy works our powers pall;
Though we should strive years without end,
We could not thank thee for them all.

Join Us For Some Christmas Cheer

christmas - Nehemiah E-Community

For the last several years, Nehemiah has welcomed its friends and neighbors to a Christmas Open House at our headquarter office each December. Last year, we introduced the book, Serve With Love and heard from Tom Mears (refer to next article below). This year, whether you are in the Portland area or not, we would like you to celebrate with us—live or virtually.

We will be featuring our own Scott Landis, who has served for several years with Kingdom Business Coaching and his wife, Tawnya of Landis Fitness. They have started a new and exciting venture called Marriage Architects. They will be sharing with all of us what God has put on their hearts that will change lives and transform marriages.

If you are in the Portland area, come and join us!

Thursday, December 14th, 2017
Nehemiah Project Office
5200 SW Meadows Road, Second Floor
Lake Oswego, OR 97035.

If you are not in Portland, tune in at around 5:30 to our Facebook Page and join us on Facebook Live as we live-stream the festivities and the Landis’ presentation.

It will be a great way to add joy and meaning to your Christmas season.

Check Out the Purpose and Profitability Podcast

podcast - Nehemiah E-Community

Purpose and Profitability is a business training course offered by Nehemiah Project designed to equip CEOs, entrepreneurs, and their teams to succeed by utilizing value-based business principles. This course makes the case that good and lasting businesses must be built for the benefit of all, including consumers, suppliers, employees, and the community at large.

Robert Fukui, of I61, has developed a podcast to advance these very ideas. For example, last week he released one called, “Your Mission as Your Brand” with Tom Mears, Chairman of the Board of Burgerville—an iconic burger franchise in the Pacific Northwest with over 40 locations.

They made the point that many businesses struggle to build a meaningful brand that everyone wants to do business with. Burgerville is known for great burgers but the essence of their brand is built around their mission statement, “Serve with Love.” They discussed how your brand can be built around your mission.
