We recently learned of the passing of a great man, Dr. John A. Cherry, my pastor for 10 years. Dr. Cherry left this life and entered into eternal rest on February 16, 2019, at the age of 79. His death was a result of major complications that he suffered during a recent exploratory procedure.
Dr. John A. Cherry was the man that the Lord used to disciple me from an ambitious self-centered entrepreneur to a Biblical Entrepreneur. It was under his leadership at From the Heart Church Ministries in Suitland, Maryland that Gina and I gave our lives to Christ in December of 1994. It was under his teaching in December of 1995, one year after we gave our lives to Christ, the Lord gave us the vision to use entrepreneurship as a tool to empower the body of Christ and to seek and save the lost. From that time on, Gina and I were at the church every time the doors opened; we attended every retreat and we joined the ministerial development program. He taught us to love God, hate sin, and love to give. He taught us how to rightly divide the Word of God. He also taught us discipline, faithfulness, and to avoid bringing shame to the body of Christ. He was a tough, loving, and faithful man.
Every church service was like going to school, we had our Bible, our notepads and it was a life-changing time. Biblical Entrepreneurship was born under his ministry. Nehemiah Project was born under his ministry. We are the fruit of his work. He also gave us the opportunity to teach Biblical Entrepreneurship at the church for 5 years and asked us to serve as chairpersons of the Business Service Ministry for 4 years. When it came time for us to be released, to pursue God’s call on our lives, without hesitation Dr. Cherry gave us his blessing and sent us off with a letter of commendation. We will forever be grateful to him and his family. It was at From the Heart Church that we learned the value of marketplace ministry and the role that business has in advancing the Kingdom of God. Join us as we celebrate the life of a man who not only impacted our lives but the lives of millions around the world.
